After being on the road for nearly a month, Jermaine Dupri’s Rap Game winners and contestants arrived in New York and hit the stage at the famed Beacon Theatre as part of Dupri’s SoSo Summer 17 tour.
The tour gives added exposure to the up and coming teen hip hop artist who were mentored by Dupri as well as competed against each other for a shot at a record deal with So So Def Records on his Lifetime reality television series The Rap Game.
The show opened with a video introduction featuring a young Jermaine Dupri before he entered the world of hip hop, in which Jermaine himself soon appeared on stage performing his verse on the 2005 Dem Franchize Boyz track he produced I Think They Like Me, and was later joined onstage by Bow Wow and the Da Brat. When it was time for the young Rap Game winners and contestants to hit the stage Supa Peach was the first up performing to Ann Peebles/Missy Elliott’s I Can’t Stand the Rain beat, followed by the show’s youngest performer and crowd favorite 13 year old King Roscoe. 16 year old Prince of NY represented his home borough Brooklyn as well as the rest of NYC when he hit the stage, delivering a Twista style rap flow, paying homage to a slain family member and rapping alongside mentor Jermaine Dupri onstage. After Prince left the stage, Da Brat appeared letting the crowd know the five things for a successful live hip hop show as well as giving the adults in the audition some throwback classics like Mary J Blige’s “I’m Going Down” and BBD’s “Poison” to jam to, before Nia Kay and Lil Key (who brought a young lady onstage) hit the stage.
DLow was the first to hit the stage after the intermission performing his viral hit Go Grandma dedicated to his late grandmother. Soon after Bow Wow hit the stage performing Shortie Like Mine, and Like you as well as showing trailer for Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta, before introducing Mani. Mani brought out Deetranada and Miss Mulato (in which the trio performed their collaboration “You Thought”) and both performed their own sets after him with Deetranada bringing out Jermaine Dupri and performing songs off her upcoming EP “Adolescence Swim” and Miss Mulatto returning Mani’s favor and bringing him out to participate in her performance. The show concluded with a performance from most recent Rap Game winner Nova.
