With the end of the year upon us, countdown lists are popping up everywhere. Call me crazy, but I feel compelled to join in! That being said, it only made sense that I make a list about J. Cole. For a couple of reasons: 1) His new album just dropped and 2) He is one of my favorite artists. So, in no particular order here are my top 5 favorite lyrics of J. Cole’s (as of now! Haha) from his albums and mixtapes:

Crooked Smile featuring the one and only TLC was not only commercially successful but broke down walls and brought me back to a time of how I felt listening to 2 Pac’s Keep Ya Head Up, so of course I had to start the list off with this gem:

Cause what’s real is something that the eyes can’t see
That the hands can’t touch, that them broads can’t be, and that’s you
Never let ’em see you frown
And if you need a friend to pick you up, I’ll be around
And we can ride with the windows down, the music loud
I can tell you ain’t laughed in a while, but I wanna see that crooked smile

-From Lights Please originally off his The Warm Up mixtape that even made it to his debut album because it was the track that convinced Jay Z to sign him:

And ain’t it shameful how niggas blame hoes for givin’ birth
To a baby that took two to make
Coward nigga you a fake
How you gon’ look in your sons face and turn your back
Then go start another family dog what type of shit is that?
She said it’s okay
Rubbed my head and told me to relax
Laid a nigga down proper like she was recordin’ tracks
Said I know you wanna change the world
But for the night please
Just reach over and hit the lights please

-Off Who Dat that pretty much put him on the map in my opinion:

Now I’m a menace. God as my witness, with this pen I’m insane, yup.
Hungry like the nigga who ain’t got the taste of fame yet.
Clown told me “ain’t you roc? well? where the fuck yo chain at?”
Guess it’s somethin like your girl, nigga it aint came yet.
The man make the chain, chain dont make the man
how many niggas do we know with hella ice but yet they lame?
the cloth from which we came me and them is not the same

-From his track Rise and Shine off his debut album (that, may I point out, starts with an audio clip of Jay from years before the two even met talking bout in order to avoid problems he’ll sign someone that wants his spot. Talk about an epic endorsement!)

The best out, foolish pride’ll make you not admit it
Word, this shit ain’t vibe nigga, why you noddin’ with it?
The hate in your blood can’t stop your soul from vibin’ with it
Now you all conflicted cause my flows is wicked

-And last but certainly not least, from Return of Simba off of one of his mixtapes. Honestly, if you don’t think that the following is one of the dopest lines ever from a sick verse in general, I’m sorry we can’t be friends. Enjoy:

Maybe over your head, I’m ahead of my time
Niggas scared of my future, I know they dreadin’ my prime.
Cause I only make classics, now what that take? Timing.
Cole under pressure, what that make? Diamonds.

Hope you liked reading these as much as I liked sharing them with you. Feel free to let us know what your favorite lines from a J. Cole track is/are!
